Internship @ Vintage Lifestyle Magazine

My Vintage Experience
(Francoise de Villiers, 2nd Year Fashion Management and Communication Student)

During my June holiday I had the opportunity to intern for the Vintage Lifestyle Magazine. For those of you who do not know, this is South Africa’s first online magazine and targets vintage lovers from all over the world. The magazine is the brainchild of 22-year-old Nicole Danielle Warr, who is still the editor-in-chief today.

The magazine has an active blog with daily posts on fashion, interior, etc. One of my first responsibilities was to compile a list of possible topics for the blog and on approval had to research and write them in time for the deadline. From the history of houndstooth to the vintage home of Florence Welch, each post had to be carefully research and quality images had to be provided.

I also had the privilege of doing press coverage at The Vintage Market on Truth, Cape Town and attend the launch of Lazuli in Canal Walk. All very exciting, until we started planning and sourcing for the editorial/cover shoot… I was in fashion heaven…

Nicole managed to pull together a great team consisting out of photographer Ashley MariĆ© Miles, hair and make-up artistJacqueline Viljoen, model sisters Lily and Phoebe Lawson and garments from Jelena Jablanovic and Riya Bella Vintage. As the fashion stylist’s assistant I was commissioned to create two headpieces out of materials sourced from Sable Square and fabric shops. I also had to meet and collect the garments from each designer and then provide Nicole with a photographic quality/state inspection of each garment.

The shoot took place on Sunday the 7th of July. The team met in an apartment in the heart of Cape Town for a crew breakfast, followed by hair and make-up and then relocated to the shoot location in Camps Bay. On the rocks, with waves crashing around us, the rainy, misty atmosphere presented the perfect setting for our elegant but whimsical sea goddess storyline.

I am extremely proud of our end result, entitled The Sea is Calm, and will forever be grateful for this internship opportunity at the Vintage Lifestyle Magazine.
