NWSD Fashion Show Theme: Confluence of Cultures

It is clear, from fashion to festivals; culture has infiltrated every area of life.

CONFLUENCE OF CULTURES

THE THEME FOR OUR FORTHCOMING
GRADUATION FASHION SHOW
Fashion Management and Communications students
had the task of conceptualizing and presenting this theme to the Fashion Design students.

We share with you the story behind this theme

To better communicate in a simple and direct way the essence and the personality of the fashion show,
we chose a tag line:
Sewing the boundaries of beliefs, traditions and morals

From this tag line, we give to the student an angle in which the theme could be interpreted and to the public we give an impression of what to expect from the forth coming Graduation Fashion show (2 November 2013)
Confluence of Cultures allows students to combine cultures of various countries no matter how far apart, no matter the language spoken and no matter the diversity in culture.
Traditions, beliefs and moral values are often the cause of distance, isolation or conflict between countries.
The theme allows students to go beyond all of these differences.
Students are given the freedom to exceed the limit of time because they have the possibility to explore cultures from any period of time.

The Mixing of cultures are applied everywhere.
Dolce & Gabanna combined Sicilian sexy with Byzantine religious symbols
Sarah Burton finds inspiration in the British royal heritage and history of Alexander McQueen
Etro and Armani creates a platform where east meets west.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art examines punk culture’s impact on high fashion with their spring exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture.

The Great Gatsby has been one of the glitziest blockbusters to hit the big, so it is no surprise that the 20’s flapper girl style is influencing trends, especially fashion.

Global influences are nesting in our homes:
With French inspired kitchens
 Moroccan inspired hallways
Indian inspired bedrooms

Roberta Bratovic and Nina Bacu transformed the traditional dress of Croatia into beautiful lampshades
Contemporary designer Jakub Berdych explores traditional Czech materials,
Klaus Haapaniemi is known using folk art from Finland and Russia, and cartoon motifs from Eastern Europe.
While Sergei Mikhailovich captures Russian natives in ‘Nostalgia’.

The music scene is taking note of Asian artists with hits such as Gangnam Style and Gentleman,
Tomorrowland is an annual 3 day music festival in Europe that brings together huge crowds from all over the world and incorporates a strong visual experience with the use of cultural and religious symbols.

And more and more people from different countries and cultures are celebrating the Indian Festival of Colours in different parts of the world.

STORY LINE
Narratives tell us about other cultures
It gives insight into different cultures and the ways of living in different regions of the world.
America prides in hardworking values, and shows that a little work can get you a long way.
Cinderella is also a “happily ever after” story.
The Mexican story shows that remaining loyal to a loved one is important to that culture.
The Saudi Arabian story shows that their culture is very different from both an American culture and a Mexican culture. Honour is valued in the Saudi Arabian society.
Narratives Tell Us About Other States
It Teaches, it teaches us.
When you were a child and you were told stories at bedtime, each story had a theme and a moral, and you learned second hand of right and wrong.
It teaches us general principles and how to act appropriately.
The role of culture is a powerful role in society. It can be adjusted and even created to fit different values and morals.
Culture is something we all participate in whether it is the country we live in, the company we work for or our family.
It binds us together.

  1. For the Gert-Johan Coetzee bursary, do I have to colour my sketches if there's fabric attached?
